Espresso Machine History

Espresso Coffee Making the Old Fashion Way, Is It For You
In today's market for espresso coffee makers one can find a machine with every imaginable bell or whistle. Even with all these elaborate machines it is still said by many that the best possible shot will come from a manual /lever type machine. The question to answer here is whether or not you are up for the effort involved.
Because of the manual/lever type machines simplistic design it gives complete control to the operator or barista. The operator not only grinds, measures, and tamps the coffee, he or she also controls the amount of water, the water temperature and the pressure of the water as it passes through the coffee. Each one of these factors can dramatically affect the quality of the shot. Because of this it takes a certain type of individual who is willing to be involved in the process to really enjoy this type of espresso coffee maker.
For the accomplished barista who loves the history, art form and the control, selecting this manual machine is almost a no brainer. A quality lever type machine can be somewhat pricey so for the novice or first time buyer the following considerations should be made.
1) Are you an individual who is usually in hurry? This method is not nearly as quick as having an automatic espresso maker where you merely push a button.
2) Do you enjoy experimentation? This would be a good thing and would add to the experience where you create the art and thus a beautiful drink.
3) Can you tolerate the trial and error that it takes to get to that perfect shot? It does take time, practice and yes some wasted product.
4) Can you be consistent in your efforts? Once you have created that perfect combination all you need to do is repeat it, no fudging.
5) Lastly, the force that one must exert while pulling a shot can be somewhat taxing and enough to make a semi or fully automatic machine your best choice.
In summing things up there are two things that none of the other types of espresso machines can give. These lever machines make great conversational pieces while you are entertaining and add a great look of old Italy to your home. Although there are several very high quality espresso coffee makers available like Gaggia and LaPavoni , they are not easily found in the stores. Currently the best source for researching and buying seems to be online.
This article is intended to provide insights into the different types of espresso machines and to aid you in your decision making process when you do decide to make a purchase. We will discuss the various techniques of using the lever/manual type espresso makers more in depth in a forth coming article.
